The over-55s retirees are getting a sense of adventure! 'Greycationers' are choosing to backpack in Burma rather than sunbathe in Spain, causing a boom in this area of the holiday market.
Retirees: Adventure over Alicante
More free time and a disposable income mean the over-55s want to get away, and they're looking for adventure with something that takes them off the beaten track.
In years gone by this age group has been fond of sunning themselves on Mediterranean beaches, but now destinations such as Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam and New Zealand are booming in popularity, where go-getting grannies and plucky papas can feel the thrill of adventure by camel riding, climbing, hiking and backpacking. This change in holiday habits is evident here at Barrhead Travel, where we've seen a rise in bookings to South America, Chile and Africa by those aged over 55 in the past few years.
Singles trips are also gaining popularity. These holidays, where a group of strangers travel and stay together, are being booked by the older generation looking for friendship...or love. Even happily-marrieds who want to try out new travel experiences with like-minded folk are booking these, if their partners don't share their taste for adventure travelling. Many a new friendship has been struck up by sharing the special experiences that being on holiday brings.
Let’s face it, there are increasing numbers of pretty cool older celebs out there, doing their bit for the reputation of the older generation. Mick Jagger, aged 71, has been rocking as a Rolling Stone for over 50 years, Joanna Lumley is 68 and loved by everyone for her quirky humour, and Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall is 57 and looks incredible. Life experience has never been so cool.

It’s still not too late to escape to the sun in style this year with our last minute holiday deals – travel onboard one of Barrhead Travel’s specially-chartered British Airways flights to your destination, and you’ll discover that your holiday starts from the moment you board the plane! Here are 10 reasons why you should book your late summer getaway using these flights, straight away...
1. With direct flights from Glasgow to the Costa del Sol (Malaga), Majorca, Venice and Barcelona, from Edinburgh to Majorca and from Aberdeen to Majorca and the Costa del Sol, it’s never been easier to plan your 2014 late getaway.
2. No more grim-faced charter flight cabin crew whose only aim is to get you to buy duty free and scratch cards! These flights are staffed by ever-professional and helpful British Airways crew, who will make sure you’re well looked after all the way.
3. Ever spent hours on a flight just wishing it would end? Cramped seats with no room to move are no fun for anyone, and don’t really put you in the holiday mood, no matter how exotic your planned trip is once you arrive. Not the case with last minute holiday deals! Spacious leather seats in a 2-2 configuration mean no middle seat nightmares, plus you’re able to stretch out comfortably as you look forward to your time in the sun.
4. Let’s face it, a 15kg checked baggage allowance doesn’t let you take all those shoes and clothes you might just need for 7 or 14 nights away from home. So the generous 20kg hold baggage allowance and 5kg hand baggage allowance will help ensure you have enough flats, sandals and heels to match every outfit on your sunshine escape.
5. Ever received an inflight meal which really didn’t hit the spot, but eaten it anyway due to sheer lack of choice? Then these flights are for you! The snack menu on board allows you to choose exactly what you’d like to eat at prices that won’t break your holiday budget.
6. Arriving in the middle of the night on your outward or return journey is no fun! Some flight times just aren’t conducive to a relaxing start or end to your well-earned vacation. Barrhead Travel’s charter flights conveniently leave at the weekends, and have flight times that mean you won’t be shattered by the time you sink into your seat onboard.
7. These flights are perfect for soaking up some late summer rays in Mediterranean destinations, but the season doesn’t end till after the October school holidays, so now’s the ideal time to plan that family holiday by speaking to one of Barrhead Travel’s experts who will tailor your holiday your way, at prices you’ll love.
8. Whether you like the freedom that self-catering holiday bring, prefer the budget-friendly all inclusive option when you’re away, or are looking for something in between, Barrhead Travel’s holidays using these fantastic flights have the board basis that best suits your requirements, giving you flexibility to choose what’s right for you.
9. Prefer to cruise? Then choose from a number of cruise options from Barcelona, or use our exclusive direct Venice flight to depart from this most breath-taking of cities. With itineraries including the Greek Isles & Turkey, the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean, you’ll sail onboard some of Europe’s most modern and spacious cruise ships. Food and entertainment, (and even on some sailings, drinks!) are included in your cruise fare, leaving you more spending money for the fascinating destinations you’ll explore each day. All aboard!
10. If a mix of land and sea is more your bag, then a stay and cruise, or cruise and stay, holiday might float your boat. What could be nicer than a relaxing week on the beach or by the pool, followed by a week on a floating hotel with top-class entertainment and the chance to discover new and breathtaking destinations? Just think of all those fab Facebook posts you can add, and the faces of your jealous friends upon your return home…

How many times have you found yourself, the night before you go on holiday, hopelessly sitting on your suitcase, trying to squeeze in the essentials? We've been there!
There seems to be a need to take everything you own on holiday 'just in case', (or 'just shove it in the case'), but do you really, really, really need it?
This handy little blog tells you the holiday essentials you need to pack, so you'll have lots of space in your case left for souvenirs!
The Essentials List
1. Flat Shoes
Unless you're devoid of any feeling in your feet, or love to be uncomfortable, flat shoes or sandals are a holiday must (especially where there's lots of walking – think theme parks in Florida or museum crawling in Rome). There's loads of fab flats in the shops this summer, and according to our fashion sources, flat shoes are all the rage. So now you can be comfortable AND fashionable. Win win, right?
No need to take this with you, simply buy it when you get to your destination. A moisturiser is really important on holiday. Spending hours in the heat can be really drying, as can chlorine in the pool, so try and moisturise daily. As well as keeping your skin soft and supple, it‘ll also help you keep your gorgeous tan for longer. Moisturisers cost just a couple of pounds, so no excuses!
3. Capsule Chic
Let's get down to the nitty gritty. You'll need clothes on your holiday, unless it's one of those holidays. The less hassle with getting ready, the better. A few capsule items will see you right. Think clothes you can wear to look chic on the beach and keep on into the evening :
Tops – 4 or 5 are enough
Skirts – a couple of different lengths
Dresses – 2 day dresses and one for evening
A kaftan – will keep you looking and feeling cool, plus they‘re really flattering for every body shape
Keep it simple, - there's no need to pack everything you own. You WON'T wear it.
Those of you waiting until you get to the airport to change your travel money are unneccesarily giving away vital shopping and cocktail funds!
Shop smart and change your money before you go.
Barrhead Travel Foreign Exchange offers excellent rates, shops that are open late, 7 days a week and the choice of ordering online – making it so easy for you to get more money in your holiday kitty! Get your holiday money here.
Best Exchange Rates
Now's a fantastic time to bag that last minute holiday. Thanks to the best exchange rates, British holidaymakers are enjoying more spending power abroad.
Whether you want to swish off to sunny Sorrento, call in to Croatia or flaunt it in Florida, the soaring pound means your money will stretch further – so you've got more chances to spoil yourself or your family with shopping trips or eating out, or even with a few extra beers or cocktails!
Head off for the US and you'll find that with the pound worth around $1.70, you can splash out on clothes, cosmetics, handbags...for a lot less than you'd expect.
Good times are here at last
The price of food and drink in many popular destinations is down considerably. Take a three course family meal in the Algarve, for example - previously €38.18 in 2013, it would cost you just €33.96 this year. Sun cream, coffee, ice cream, beach towels...across Europe and beyond, the prices this year have dropped, so why not take advantage?
With best exchange rates since the recession started in 2008, it looks like the good times are here at last - for the British holidaymaker, anyway. The favourable dollar and euro rates are expected to be around till the end of 2014, so don't put off that holiday till next year, when you can get so much more for your money by travelling now. That way you can spend, spend, spend in the destination of your dreams!
Enjoy the benefits of spending your money

Everywhere we look technology is changing the way we work, the way we live, and the way we Travel. Each month we will post reviews and updates on new Gadgets (and some older ones) and apps to help you make the most of your holiday. Arguably one of the most important gadgets you take away is your holiday camera.
The camera - How else would you be able to show off the white sandy beach to everyone stuck in the office? We've pulled together some tips on what to look for in a digital camera:
Holiday Camera Essentials
Digital cameras have two types of zoom, Optical and digital.
Optical zoom results in a much better image as it uses the cameras lens to zoom in on the subject, instead of enlarging the pixels. A camera with a 15x optical zoom should be fine for most holidays, however if your going on a Safari, or adventure holiday - you might need more!
Size and weight
Remember whatever camera you take, you need to carry!
Most compact cameras are small and lightweight, however if portability is a concern, then maybe think about an ultra-compact camera. These tend to be about 2cm thick, but do have fewer manual controls and features, but should still capture most holiday snaps
Reduce the number of gadgets you need to carry by taking a camera that also records video. Many compact cameras can now record HD video, and are ideal for recording short clips to send to friends and family
Think about your holiday before buying a camera. Is it an adventure holiday - in which case something rugged and waterproof might be worth the investment, if spending time at the beach, or doing watersports, then a waterproof camera would be worth getting.
Buying memory cards abroad can be expensive, so make sure you have at least 1gb of space for pictures before going away!
As the gates to Halloween Horror Nights open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, The Purge: Anarchy, inspired by Universal Pictures’ new thriller.
The Purge: Anarchy scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie’s premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will be inhabited by average citizens transformed into sadistic felons during this period of government-sanctioned lawlessness. Like civilians in the movie fighting to survive, guests will be at the mercy of cunning wit, luck and speed as they attempt to outsmart and outlive the anarchy brought about by those who believe in an “eye for an eye”.
The Purge: Anarchy, the sequel to last summer’s surprise hit, moves from the confines of a suburban neighbourhood to the streets as the government begins its annual 12-hour Purge to ensure that the crime rate stays below one percent for the rest of the year. With all emergency services suspended, it’s the one night when society regulates itself without thought of punishment or fear of retribution.
For average people who do not have the means to barricade themselves indoors with a state-of-the-art security system, anarchy rules and no one is safe. In this new story, an unlikely group of five citizens discover how far they will go to protect themselves and, ultimately, each other, as they fight to survive a dangerous night fraught with impossible decisions.
Halloween Horror Nights' terrifying scare-zones
“Halloween Horror Nights is about taking guests out of their comfort zones and placing them at the core of unimaginable horror,” said John Murdy, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Creative Director and Executive Producer of Halloween Horror Nights. “Because the premise of The Purge could theoretically happen, our scare-zone elevates that sense of fear and forces you to really watch your back. Imagining how your neighbour, friend or enemy could take revenge on you without retribution because you wronged them takes horror to a whole new level, and we wanted to bring that gut-wrenching terror to every one of our guests”.
“The Purge scarezone will invade the streets of Halloween Horror Nights, taking up most of our New York back lot. The chaos that reigns in the film will be replicated nightly, but now our guests can actually attempt to survive the night themselves,” said Michael Aiello, Director of Entertainment – Creative Development, Universal Orlando Resort. “The familiar emergency broadcast will be heard announcing the commencement of the annual Purge, and all ***** will literally break loose.”
Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights events have a more than 20-year history of creating incredibly entertaining, horrifying Halloween experiences that are consistently rated America’s best. The events on each coast feature highly-themed, disturbingly real, haunted mazes based on everything from films to nightmares – and streets filled with hundreds of specially trained “scareactors” in uniquely themed scare-zones. In addition to The Purge: Anarchy, other announced experiences include, The Walking Dead: The End of the Line, From Dusk Till Dawn and Face Off: In the Flesh.
To complement its numerous mazes, Halloween Horror Nights features a variety of terrifying scare-zones designed to provoke heart-pounding fear as guests navigate the park from one traumatizing experience to the next, unsure of what lies just around the corner.
Barrhead Travel and the Jamaican Tourist Board brought the style, culture and colour of Jamaica to Glasgow on 2nd July, when Jamaica House 2014 opened at 29 in Glasgow ahead of the Commonwealth Games - with a little help from Jamaica's own Levi Roots. Bringing some Caribbean sunshine to a rainy Glasgow, Reggae Reggae sauce founder Levi declared Jamaica House 2014 officially open with a ***** chicken cookery demonstration, and spoke of his Scottish heritage, and the links between Jamaica and Scotland.
"Jamaica's had a romance with Scotland forever and I relish my Scottishness", Levi said. "Not a lot of people know my real name is Keith Graham, a Scottish name. About 90% of people in Jamaica have Scottish surnames, as so many of Scots came to Jamaica from Scotland in years gone by. We're very proud of our Scottish inheritance."
'Food is Jamaica's gift to the world.'
Levi adds "Jamaicans and Scots rise above everyone else where passion is concerned - it's what we do best. I‘ve always said that Jamaica is the largest small country in the world, because of that passion.“
As he cooked his ***** chicken recipe on 29’s terrace barbeque using his own Reggae Reggae sauce, he talked about Jamaica's relationship with food, and how to make the perfect ***** sauce.
"Food is Jamaica's gift to the world. When cooking ***** chicken, I always use Scotch Bonnet peppers, as it's not true ***** without it! The recipe I use was passed down to me from my Grandmother, so it's connected to me."
Authentic ***** seasoning
Levi offered his advice for cooks wanting an authentic ***** culinary experience. "Of course, we need the Scotch Bonnet. We Jamaican always use garlic, ginger, spring onion, lime and some cinnamon or nutmeg. Top it off with a little white wine vinegar or olive oil and some black pepper and you've got some delicious, authentic *****."
For those of us who would rather stay at home and watch Jamaica take on the rest of the Commonwealth, why not try Levi's quick and easy recipe for Reggae Reggae chicken wrap whilst watching their superstar athletes compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games? Delicious yet easy to make, it’s ideal for busy Games-watchers who want to see as much of the sporting action as possible.

As the sunshine stays out to play for longer, our minds naturally go to that happy place. Walks along the promenade, dinner outdoors, exploring sandy beaches and getting away for some hard-earned relaxation. But whilst our minds get fixated on that golden future, it’s easy for us to forget your holiday treatments preparation needed beforehand. To help, we’ve got the perfect checklist for you – one that you’ll enjoy and benefit from! If you haven’t taken a trip to PURE Spa & Beauty (located in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen), this might be the great excuse you need for some pre-vacation indulgence.
PURE Spa & Beauty
PURE Spas are havens of tranquillity, where you can truly switch off and enjoy a superb therapy in luxurious surroundings. With today’s hectic lifestyle, we feel it is essential to take some time out for reflection and relaxation, and the benefit of the whole experience on your general health and wellbeing lasts much longer than the therapy itself.
Lothian Road and Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh
Union Square, Aberdeen
1. Body Exfoliation
Ah yes, the often-overlooked body exfoliation, probably one of the most essential of holiday treatements. Removing the dead skin cells that clog up your skin, an exfoliation leaves the skin smooth, healthy and fresh. PURE spa use Elemis Lime & Ginger Salt Glow, which is renowned for stimulating your metabolism and purifying traits. A must-have to feel comfortable in your own skin!
2. Body Waxing
Wax on, wax off – whether you’re a man or woman, a holiday means putting almost everything on show. For any fuzz you’d rather wasn’t there, we suggest booking in for a waxing appointment.
3. Full-body tan
Sprayed all over for full and natural coverage, PURE Spa & Beauty uses Sunbelievable by Leighton Denny. It is a fantastic way to kick-start a tan and avoid looking like Casper at the beach, without over-cooking in any harmful UV rays.
4. Eye Enhancement
Your eyes are one of the best accessories you own, so make them stand out! We recommend an eyebrow tint and shape, helping to define your eyebrows. This is particularly good at framing the face and defining the features. We also suggest eyelash tint, which darkens your lashes making them look longer and fuller… if only we could make your holiday longer, too!
5. Shellac Mani-Pedi
We’ll waste no more time introducing this chip-resistant polish. Having a manicure or pedicure (or both!) before holidays is a must-have of the many holiday treatments for many women. It’s open-toe season, after all. With Shellac, you can board that airplane with confidence knowing that the colour will still be there on your return. If you don’t party too hard! The only issue is choosing a colour that goes with everything.
