So we're having a small debate in the office regarding Christmas Puddings. I've never been a fan and I think they have served their time. However, we have a few in the office that claim they will never go out of date. Thoughts?

Cruising for Newbies - We're Here to Help!!

If you are new to cruising then doubt you will be finding that it is a minefield of information with some of the jargon making no sense at all. So, to help you cruiser newbies out we have created a Cruise Jargon Guide. Types of Cruising Mini Cruise – A mini cruise is usually a cruise that is no more than 5 nights. Here’s why - Alaska, Virgin America and Horizon Air are celebrating “National Ugly Holiday Sweater day” on 15th December by offering priority boarding to anyone wearing an “ugly holiday sweater”. "Travel during the holidays can be stressful for guests, especially those who do not travel often,” said Natalie Bowman, managing director of marketing and advertising at Alaska Airlines. Anyone taking up the offer is encouraged to tag their photos and videos using the hashtags: #UglySweaterDay and #MostWestCoast.

    Fraudulent Transactions via Airbnb Increasing

A news report has been published highlighting the increasing number of fraudulent transactions serviced via Airbnb. It was reported that almost 1 million customers have fallen victim to some type of fraud from the website within the last year. Research into the home sharing company found that one in five complainants had a host cancel their stay at the last minute or never turn up. More than a quarter reported unsafe conditions, such as a bug infestation, or the accommodation not being as described and one in six said they were victim of a scam, such as the host demanding extra cash when they arrived. The study, conducted by travel blogger Asher Fergusson, quotes Airbnb employees as saying between 3% and 7% of stays turn into a problem. With 80 million trips completed on the website in 2016 that suggests that up to 5.5 million travellers had a bad experience last year. Fergusson stated; “Airbnb doesn’t require any ID other than an email address and phone number so anyone could be your host. “They don’t even require real names or profile photos. This means you could end up staying with a criminal, registered sex offender or scam artist.” This report highlights the importance of holiday financial protection and ensuring your booking provider is ABTA and ATOL protected. Travel companies like Barrhead Travel conduct due diligence on all hotels, airlines, tour operators, cruise lines and travel partners to ensure quality and safety.

    Erins Kenya Adventure

Our very own Erin from our Dumfries branch has just returned from the most magical trip to Kenya and has been kind enough to give us a little insight into her trip: Destination: Kenya - Nairobi/ Masai Mara/ Nakuru/ Naivasha/ Amboseli and Mombasa Overview: Kenya is a place I had always dreamed of going and it certainly did not disappoint. Within the first two days we almost saw all of the big 5 and much more on our game drives in Masai Mara, It was out of this world. Visiting the Masai Village was an experience you couldn't get anywhere else! I have experienced and learned things I never thought I would on this trip and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to something completely different. Things to see: Masai Village is a must see: Here is where you get to meet the local Masai people and learn about their way of living, you might even be lucky enough to see a traditional dance. It’s definitely a once in a life time experience. Masai Mara game reserve: This was my favourite game reserve of the three that we visited. The animals that we got to see up close were unbelievable and the photo opportunities were endless! Mombasa: Mombasa has some beautiful beaches to stroll along, perfect if you want to finish your holiday with a few days relaxation by the sea and is only a 1hr flight from Nairobi to Mombasa. What to Pack: A neck Pillow! This is a must for long flights/ transfers and helps cushion you on the safaris. Also comfy footwear and clothes again for long time sitting in safari bus/ transfers. At night in the hotels dress code is mostly casual. The last, and most important, is mosquito bands and spray as there is a lot of bugs flying about at night. My Top Tips: *Do 3/4 nights in the Masai Mara as this is where we saw most of the animals on our trip. The game reserve is more open and you can go along little roads right up beside the animals compared to the other two game reserves where you can’t get as close. *No need for adaptors as the sockets European sockets. *If you are thinking of adding on a few nights at the beach in Mombasa check where the hotel is, as the Baobab Beach Resort is about a three hour transfer from the airport including a ferry ride. * If you can do a boat ride on Lake Naivasha to see the Hippos up close. It was a scary experience but amazing at the same time. Hotel/Ship Recommendations: Panari hotel in Nairobi is perfect for anyone with children as there is a cinema and ice rink in the hotel!! We only had a quick visit to this hotel but it had a great atmosphere and seemed like a family friendly hotel. Mara Sarova Camp in Masai Mara - Luxury tents. We stayed in the club tents that were very spacious. Luxury tents would be perfect for anyone that is looking for the full safari experience as most tents look on to the game reserve its self (secured by an electric fence). At night you can hear all the animals as you’re only a canvas wall away from the outside. Keekorok Lodge Masai Mara. We only visited this hotel but I would have loved to stay here. It has its very own Hippo pool that you can walk along beside the tree top observatory to see during the day and at night the hippos come into the lodge grounds to graze. Ol Tukai Lodge in Amboseli. This was my favourite hotel by far. The rooms were a bit more modern and clean to the other ones we stayed in and there was lots of monkey running around outside. Great food and nice bar area are too.

How to Get a FREE Upgrade to First Class!

Travel expert and author Rick Brown has revealed his secret to sneaking your way into those elite seats – you hope and pray you have a broken seat. Of course it’s not guaranteed that you will have a broken seat/seatbelt but if you do, the airline must give you another seat if you ask. The downside, you might just be given another economy seat. However if you’re lucky enough you will be given first class if that is all that is available. Has anyone ever blagged their way into First Class from economy? If you have, we want to know how (even if you tried and failed).
  22. Princess Cruises are set to celebrate their 50th Year in Alaska with their largest ever deployment in 2019. An astonishing seven Princess ships will sail to Alaska with the Royal Princess making her inaugural sailing. "Our upcoming 2019 Alaska season marks our 50th year taking guests to this bucket-list destination, that for most is a life-changing experience offering breathtaking scenery and awe-inspiring moments," said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. "In 1969, Princess Italia was our first ship to bring 525 passengers to Alaska. In 2019, we will mark another milestone by bringing Royal Princess, our largest ship ever deployed to this region, with more than 3,500 guests."
  23. We all know the trail of devastation that Hurricane Irma left behind so Barrhead Travel were more than delighted to see Saint Maarten welcomed its first cruise ship back into to port. Viking Sea docked in Philipsburg and marked a huge day in the Islands steps to recovery. Complimentary #SXMStrong wristbands were given to passengers who came ashore to mark the occasion. The Boardwalk was full with a steel band and a mini-parade with the Youmay Drum Band throughout the day along with DJ entertainment. “We are very pleased with how the first commercial cruise ship call went, and we are looking forward to the next call which is on Tuesday, December 5 when Marella Discovery arrives with approximately 2,000 passengers. The onus remains on us to do everything we can to ensure a great experience for cruise visitors,” Port St. Maarten Management said on Monday.

How do you book your excursions?

I absolutely agree @Tcheuchter if it's unmissable then you must book in advance but I don't always suggest booking excursions direct with the cruise line. I always advise asking your travel agent about tours before you commit to booking direct with the cruise line. There have been many cases where booking tours pre departure has saved customers a lot of money. Shannon
