Make Sure You Check Your Insurance Policy!

So here is a fun fact, or not so fun in the case of the half a million Britons that could be heading onto the slopes each day without the correct cover. 38 per cent of over 55’s who take a winter-sports holiday. An astonishing one third or people admitting that they never check whether their travel insurance covers winter sports. A report released by ABTA, which surveyed over 2,000 adults, showed that the over 55’s bracket was the most guilty of checking their insurance policy before they travel and the 18 to 24’s being the most prepared with only 14% not checking their policy. Airlines to Ban Smart Luggage

Barrhead Travel have learned that several US airlines are taking steps that will ban passengers from checking in smart luggage items that don’t have removable batteries. American Airlines and Delta Airlines are said to be the first major airlines that will take a stand against the high-tech suitcases, saying that “due to the potential for the powerful batteries to overheat and pose a fire hazard risk during flight” any piece of luggage containing a lithium-ion battery that can’t be removed would not be permitted as a checked bag starting January 15. Other carriers such as United Airlines and Southwest Airlines are currently examining their policies and working on similar changes in the near future. “As part of safety management and risk mitigation, we always evaluate ways to enhance our procedures, and the safety team at American has conducted its own analysis of these bags,” an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement. What do you think of these changes? Let us know in the comments below.

    Princess and P&O Loyalty programme

If you are concerned about losing your Princess/P&O loyalty points this small guide should help you understand it a little: P&O Cruises bookings that are booked by (inclusive of) Tuesday 12 December 2017 will still count towards Princess Cruises' Captain's Circle Membership. P&O Cruises bookings that are booked on or after Wednesday 13 December 2017 will not count towards Princess Cruises' Captain's Circle Membership. 7. If you haven’t read the story on Vera Burrell and her mystery travel partner your missing out on quite possibly the nicest story of the year. Vera had only stopped off for a pub lunch and a mere forty-five minutes later the 90-year-old great-grandmother was in a travel agents store booking a luxury cruise with a 91-year-old stranger she had just met. “Life is for living — I am not dead yet. You have got to get on with it, haven’t you?” she said. Mrs. Burrell began chatting with her mystery travel companion, who wishes to remain nameless, when he entered the Old vine pub. “We were talking about holidays and I told him how I go on coach journeys around the country, how I used to go abroad but don’t anymore,” she told the Daily Mail. “He said, ‘My late wife and I really enjoyed cruising.’ He’d been round the world several times but his sight was now so impaired he can’t see anything. He asked if she had ever been on a cruise. “I told him I couldn’t afford it and secondly my late husband would never have gone on a cruise.” Before they knew it they were making their way to a travel agents across the road to book a £3,700 11-night Mediterranean cruise on board P&O’s Azura. “Before I knew it the worker was asking his name and then she asked what my name was — and at that point he leaned over and said, ‘What’s your name, my dear?’” When the employee asked how long they’d known each other, she replied: “About three quarters of an hour.” She described how a concerned cousin in Australia emailed to say, “Haven’t you been told about stranger danger?”, but she replied: “John was not the Southampton strangler. He was a gentleman.” The next time Mrs Burrell saw the widower, who was also a great-grandfather, was on board the ferry in Southampton, where they were shown to their shared cabin. There was no romance but they returned happily from the cruise last month, having visited Lisbon, Porto, Cadiz, Cartagena, Malaga and Gibraltar. If this story doesn’t brighten up your Monday we don’t know what will

    Princess Gives Back!

As you may know, we love when we see our travel partners doing good deeds so we couldn’t hide our grins when we heard about Princess Cruises giving a little back to under privileged children in Singapore. Every year Princess Cruises invite children onboard for a day where they can enjoy a ship tour along with special activities onboard. This initiative is part of Princess Cruises’ corporate social responsibility programme in Singapore, which is specifically designed to extend goodwill to the local community. “We have celebrated the launch of our homeporting seasons in Singapore each year with a children’s event onboard and we are continuing this practice by treating the children to a day of food, games and entertainment onboard the Sapphire Princess. It is truly heartening to see the smiling faces of the children and give them precious bonding time with their families onboard a world-class cruise liner“, said Farriek Tawfik, Director of Southeast Asia, Princess Cruises. Large Ships Banned from Venice

Plans are to be put in place for a new route for cruise ships of 100,000 tonnes or more after a new rule was set in place that restricts larger ships sailing into the centre of Venice. Venetians and environmentalists have voiced their concerns for many years, so much so that a temporary rule was set in place in 2013 which stated that ships that were 96,000 tonnes or more were banned from Giudecca Canal. “Work needs to be carried out on the new route, which will open within four years, infrastructure and transport minister” Graziano Delrio said. Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said: “We want it to be clear to Unesco [the United Nations cultural agency] and the whole world that we have a solution,” Brugnaro said after the meeting of the governmental committee charged with saving Venice. “This takes into account all the jobs created by the cruise industry, which we absolutely couldn’t afford to lose, and we can start to work seriously on planning cruises.”
