The itinerary also includes visits to Sheffield Park, Newfoundland Memorial Park, Lochnagar Crater and Thiepval Memorial. MS Princess will also Lille, which was occupied by the Germans from October 1914 to October 1918, before visiting the largest French military cemetery in the world at Notre Dame de Lorette, in Arras. Guests can also enjoy: - A visit to the Vimy Ridge memorial - A visit to Messines Ridge, where on June 7, 1917, the detonation of 19 mines began an offensive by the British Second Army to capture the German-held high ground. - A stop at Menin Gate, in Ypres, to witness the Last Post ceremony - A tour of Ypres battlefields, cemeteries, memorials and museums - A walking tour of Ghent is scheduled to highlight how this intimate Flemish city escaped total devastation during 1914 to 1918. Retiring in Style

If you haven’t already noticed, we at Barrhead Travel love a little feel good story. So we couldn’t hide our smile when heard the story of Bernard and Janice Caffary. This fantastic couple are doing retirement in the way some of us could only dream of, by completing 200 cruises in 15 years or 878 days at sea (equating to an average of 13 sailings per year in case you were wondering!) with our friends at Carnival Cruise Lines. Whichever way you look at it, we’re very jealous. And if you think the Caffrey’s are slowing down anytime soon, think again, they have a whopping 30 more cruises booked. “We really do like the crew - it's a family atmosphere,” said Mrs Caffary in 2015. “A lot of the staff members call us ‘mum’ and ‘dad’.” The couple even wear badges on their cruises that read: “I give crew hugs.” Of course, to honour the couple’s landmark sailing, Carnival showed how much their loyalty means to them by having a ceremony to mark the occasion along with adding on all of the VIP perks to their latest trip. “They love the ship and they love the staff, and it's a big part of their lives,” said a Carnival spokesman. “It's a pretty amazing feat. We're very excited to have them.” Congratulations Mr & Mrs Caffrey, we wish you many more happy days at sea Would you like to spend your retirement years at sea? Let us know in the poll above.

Barrhead Travel does Ben Lomond - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month, on Saturday 21st October myself and 8 of my wonderful Barrhead Team, braved the rain, wind and freezing temperatures to make the 3,200 feet climb upto the top of Ben Lomond. It was a gruelling 5 hour round trip but what an incredible achievement for all of us, all in aid of the wonderful charity Breast Cancer Awareness. We all know someone who has been affected by this horrible disease, so the more money we raise the more we can help the amazing doctors and nurses help those currently battling cancer and more importantly the money we raise will go towards helping researchers finally kick cancers butt once and all. I am very proud to say we have raised a whopping £2,000 and the amount is still growing so thank you to everyone that sponsored our team

Cunard Return to Alaska after 20 Years

In the Barrhead Travel office we are big fans of Alaska with many of our team having sailed Alaskan cruises in the past, therefore we were delighted to hear that Cunard is set to return to Alaska for the first time in more than twenty years! The Queen Elizabeth will set sail for Alaska from Yokohama on 5th May 2019 where she will remain for her first official Alaska season, carrying out 10 mighty sailings to Vancouver (roundtrip). Queen Elizabeth will travel through inside passages as well as spending full days in the region’s prime ports. Angus Struthers, Cunard’s vice-president marketing, said: “We’re thrilled to make our return to Alaska, one of the world’s must-see destinations. “As the majestic Queen Elizabeth undertakes her first season there, our guests can explore the region with highlights including the natural wonders of Tracy Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier.” Have you been on an Alaska cruise or is it something you’re thinking about? Tell us about it in our Canada & Alaska forum!
  15. If there’s one thing we love hearing about at Barrhead Travel, it’s the amazing events taking place across the travel industry for some fantastic causes. Our partners at Carnival Cruise Line have been on a quest to make over 100 children smile from ear to ear. To synchronise with Build-A-Bear’s Workshops 20th Birthday, Carnival hosted a day of fun on-board Carnival Magic for more than 100 kids from Florida’s “Boys and Girls Clubs”. The event gave the chance for local children to come on-board and make their own cuddly bears along with being presented a Carnival t-shirt, bear-themed sweets and a pizza Party. To top all of this off, the children even enjoyed a guided tour on board Carnival Magic. The day concluded with Carnival Cruise Lines offering a very generous $10,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs. The family-friendly cruise line told us: “We’re proud and honoured to host this event aboard Carnival Magic which provided kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs with their very own cuddly bear as a permanent reminder of their memorable time on board,” said Caroline Lombardi, director of youth experience at Carnival Cruise Line. “The festivities were also a great way to showcase our wonderful partnership with Build-A-Bear and celebrate a significant milestone in their history.” Sounds like a great day and a wonderful partnership – well done Carnival Cruise Lines!

@Lisa2180 I think the common thought with Cancun is that it's not really a family holiday but there are so many different things to keep the little ones entertained. I'm definitely considering taking my 7 year old next year! Shannon

7 Questions with Bella @ Carnival Cruise Lines

    1. Where's the best place you've ever stayed? The best place I have stayed was Iceland, it’s the most starkly beautiful country I have ever visited, with blue, black and white being the predominant colours of the expansive landscape. The scenery was stunning with the piercing aquamarine blue of the glaciers being my absolute trip highlight closely followed by the wonders of the waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes and of course the tranquil ‘Blue Lagoon’. We were also lucky enough to see the Northern Lights both from the wonderful Pingvellir National Park and also from the balcony of our hotel on the outskirts of Reykjavik- A most fascinating trip! 2. What's your oddest travel moment? My oddest travel moment was when we were on a night safari in the middle of the desert in Abu Dhabi, enjoying a barbecue under the stars when the guides started playing a 2pac song full of swearing at full blast on their radio, it was such a contrast to the peaceful setting and otherwise serene evening! 3. Have you had a perfect travel moment? My perfect travel moment was when my boyfriend got down on one knee in the sand and proposed at the beautiful Cambridge Beaches Resort at sunset in Bermuda last year, it was wonderful and totally unexpected (he’s not normally romantic!), a perfect end to one of the most lovely days! 4. What are your three suitcase essentials? I can’t be without hand sanitizer, witch doctor gel (good for all manner of things) and some good books for the journey 5. What's your top travel tip? Take a good guidebook and do some research beforehand so you know the best times/days to visit certain places or whether you need to pre-book. My fave guide books are the Eyewitness Top 10 books, for a quick and handy point of reference whilst on the move! 6. What is the biggest myth about Carnival? That we only offer ‘party cruises’! There’s a lot more to a Carnival cruise than expected with our fantastic service, plentiful restaurants and food choices and convivial ambiance always scoring highly with our guests 7. Tell us the most unorthodox way you’ve travelled? Speeding across the snow on ski-doo’s whilst on a snowboarding holiday in Switzerland was very exhilarating! Snow mobiles like this are definitely not my usual way of getting about but I’d definitely like to do it again!
