7 Questions with Jo @ Wellington NZ

Where's the best place you've ever stayed? I’ve been lucky enough to stay in some amazing places, but I love The Imperial Hotel in New Delhi. The man who delivers the toast is starched and turbaned to perfection and looks like the most important person there. What's your oddest travel moment? An overland convoy through the disputed desert territory between Morocco and Mauritania. We had to get off our overland truck, walk one by one over a Saharan sand dune, past a tin shed serving as Customs post staffed by a completely desert-wrapped soldier with a machine gun. Once all the travellers had walked across, each vehicle in the convoy had to push pedal to metal to try and get across the sand dune without getting bogged .. or going off track and ending up in the surrounding minefield. The last vehicle was a truck with big clown faces on the side, crewed by clowns from Belgium heading to West Africa to entertain trauma-impacted children. Surreal. Have you had a perfect travel moment? Really, you wanted me to pick just one?! I love reflecting on the ‘champagne moment’ each day I’m on holiday - so dozens, but sharing a water hole with an elephant in Chiang Mai and having him ‘hold my hand’ with his trunk is right up there. And the first time I saw a lion on safari in Namibia. And the in-house cooking school at the Tuscan villa was the fulfilment of a very long held dream. What are your three suitcase essentials? Packing cells to contain the small stuff, bubble wrap to protect the impractical treasures I invariably find and a pair of very comfortable shoes. Where's next on your wish list? At home, an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound in New Zealand. On my next UK trip, I really want to visit Hadrian’s Wall. Next big trip - cycling in France or Italy. What is the biggest myth about Wellington? It’s just a place to pass through on your way to the ferry. Wellington is a great place to get the stories of New Zealand, interspersed with film, food, craft beer and friendly locals. The feedback I hear most often is ‘I wish I’d known as I would have stayed longer.” Now you know - two nights minimum! The most unorthodox way you’ve travelled? Reed boat out to the islands on Lake Titicaca. Not sure it’d pass any current H&S legislation though!

7 Questions with Geoff @ Tourism Wanaka

I’m an Essex-boy born and bred, and moved New Zealand in 2001. After 10-years working in Auckland as an IT sales manager I quit the rat-race and moved to Wanaka on the South Island. For the past 7-years I’ve been working as the business development executive for Lake Wanaka Tourism and reckon that Wanaka is the best place to live in the world! 1. Where's the best place you've ever stayed? Top Forks Hut, Mount Aspiring National Park near Wanaka, New Zealand. This is a classic Department of Conservation backcountry hut with the most amazing views across pristine rainforest to towering mountains and glaciers. We hiked in for Christmas with heavy packs laden with yummy food and wine and spent 3-days in this amazing wilderness environment without seeing another soul! That’s one of the best things about living in Wanaka – easy access to true wilderness experiences. Top Forks Hut, Mount Aspiring National Park near Wanaka, NZ. 2. What's your oddest travel moment? The Robot Restaurant in Tokyo. The most bizarre mix of Japanese kitsch, anime cartoon characters, rock n’roll, laser lights and dancing robots. Go with an open-mind, and prepare for it to be blown! 3. Have you had a perfect travel moment? Arriving in a Japanese ski resort last February during the biggest snowfall since the 1980’s. The snow didn’t stop for 10-days and we skied perfect, waist-deep, champagne powder every day! Oh, and the food was to die-for… 4. What are your three suitcase essentials? 1. Earplugs - you never know when you’ll end up next to a snorer 2. Camera - I’m an avid photographer and love documenting my travels (check out some of my photos on Instagram, @the_viewfinda) 3. Water purification tablets – especially important if you like to travel off the beaten track! 5. Where's next on your wish list? Ski-touring in Norway. The chance to ski from the summit of a mountain down to the fiords has real appeal, and the opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis and compare it to Wanaka’s own Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) is exciting too. The Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, over Wanaka 6. What is the biggest myth about Lake Wanaka? That Wanaka is just like Queenstown, but smaller. Yes, Wanaka is a smaller town than Queenstown and the alpine landscape is similar, but Wanaka is a unique and very special destination. Why? You’ll have to come and find out yourself (or talk to your friendly Barrhead Travel consultant)! Wanaka, New Zealand – nothing like Queenstown! 7. The most unorthodox way you’ve travelled? A Thai Navy Battleship…. I was staying on Koh Tao island in Thailand when the monsoon struck with a huge week long storm. No boats could get to or from the island and supplies of fresh food and water were running low. It was too dangerous to evacuate the tourists from the island by the usual small ferry boats so the Navy was called in to help! Has anyone been whale watching?

I took a whale watching trip when I visited Kaikoura and it was amazing. We were lucky enough to see several sperm whales which are absolutely huge! Including the local resident whale, Manu. It was incredible to see the whales in their natural habitat and I managed to get lots of photos. We seen literally hundreds of dolphins too which was amazing. Kaikoura is also a stunning town, I can't recommend it enough. It is possible to see Orca's migrating in the summer months. I took my trip during January but unfortunately didn't get to see any. This is definitely on my list and I would just love to see some Orca's on my next whale watching trip. Has anyone been lucky enough to see any whales in New Zealand and what was your experience like?
  8. Somewhat overshadowed by the Northern Lights, the Southern Lights are a sight to behold and just as spectacular as their northern counterpart. As the name suggests, the lights can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere, and only from a very few secluded spots. The Southern Lights, officially known as the Aurora Australis, are best seen in the southern hemispheres winter months – July to August have significantly longer nights and darker skies, heightening your viewing chances. As there is significantly less land in the Southern Hemisphere there are fewer ideal viewing spots to see the lights, so we have put together five places to help you on your way to witnessing the incredible Southern Lights. 1. Stewart Island, New Zealand Thanks to a low population and low levels of light pollution, the elusive lights can be seen from several places in New Zealand. Stewart Island is one of the country’s most remote spots and the closest you will ever get to the South Pole without visiting Antarctica, making it the perfect location for some Aurora viewing. The island is home to Rakiura National Park which aptly translates in Maori to ‘land of the glowing skies’. 2. South Georgia Island South Georgia Island is one of the most Southern islands in the world. During the winter months from March to September, the island can be encased by ice and completely inaccessible. Of course, the dark skies make these months the best time to see the lights, so make sure to visit in March otherwise it is just too dangerous to travel. The most popular way to visit is by cruise. As the island has no permanent residents, the clear skies make for an untarnished and unique location for Aurora viewing. 3. Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand A top tip for viewing the Southern Lights is to observe them over water. This makes New Zealand’s many lakes an ideal place to view a mesmerising Aurora display. Lake Tekapo is located in the centre of the South Island and has extremely clear skies, making it a popular spot for star gazing and aurora viewing. Mount Cook National Park offers secluded and tranquil spots to take in the Aurora Australis. Both of these areas are part of the official UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, meaning they are recognised as having some of the darkest skies in the world. You can also climb up the mountains surrounding the lake from an even higher vantage point to see the extraordinary lights. 4. Tasmania, Australia Tasmania’s unique southern location - that is in close proximity to the South Pole - makes it one of the best locations to view the Southern Lights. Luckily, you can be treated to views of the Southern Lights from Tasmania all year round, but your best chances are during the winter months of June to August. The aurora comes in many colours and you can watch the sky dance a variety of greens, pinks, yellows and oranges for a truly magical display. The lights can be seen from anywhere on Tasmania and views are usually only obstructed by mountain ranges, but with plenty of clear open spaces here you can take your pick of locations for unparalleled views. 5. Antarctica Perhaps somewhat obvious, the further south you go, the higher your chances are of seeing the spectacular light show. Therefore it is not surprising that the Southern Lights have been described as being the most visible and most impressive when lighting up the sky over Antarctica. As there are no permanent residents on the whole continent, there is virtually no pollution and during the winter months the Aurora Australis is visible on a regular basis. Unfortunately it is not realistic for most people to visit due to the costly nature of a trip here and the dangerous risks that come with it. Luckily, there are plenty of other destinations for you to take a trip and chase the Aurora Australis!

    A Kilted Kiwi

As a Kiwi in Scotland, here's some of the things I miss the most about NZ, sitting up in the Port Hills of Christchurch enjoying the view from the endless beaches right through to the majestic southern alps, driving up the pacific coast to Kaikoura and buying freshly caught crayfish, driving down through the centre of the South Island past the stunning Lake Pukaki with its mirror like water and clear view of New Zealand's tallest peak, Mt Cook. These are just some of my memories of home, for anyone who has travelled to NZ, what was your favourite thing /place about the country? Or is there anything you wish you could have brought home with you? On a recent trip down to Wanaka, my wife and I took our wedding outfits and managed to get this pic on the shore of Lake Pukaki. What are your best pics from your trip to New Zealand?

7 Questions with Tracee @ Nelson, New Zealand

Tracee was born and bred in Nelson but after college did a business degree in Dunedin in the South Island. After making Wellington her home for several years, Tracee spent 4 years based in Europe doing the typical kiwi “overseas experience” – working in banking but spending extended experiences in Europe and further afield. Tracee returned home to the top of the south to her home town of Nelson 12 years ago where the sun always shines and now has the fantastic job of promoting the region. It’s a great place to raise kids and to have your family and friends visit. After all, what’s not to like about living in the creative capital of New Zealand with three national parks, many wineries and breweries plus, great biking and the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. 1. Where's the best place you've ever stayed? Right here in sunny Nelson at the top of the South Island at Split Apple Retreat. The retreat, located on the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park, is renowned for its gourmet Asian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine and its health and wellness ethos. With spectacular scenery, outstanding service and fantastic art and antiques, despite being well-travelled it’s a real stand out for me 2. What's your oddest travel moment? Nothing particularly odd but I did get lost in the Guatemalan jungle with two others 20 years ago, whilst visiting the Tikal National Park. Walked out on the third day fortunately…. 3. Have you had a perfect travel moment? Because of my role in tourism here in Nelson, I often go into the Abel Tasman National Park walking or kayaking for leisure or more often or not with visiting media or Trade. Despite many visits, I am still blown away by the golden sands and turquoise waters of the Abel Tasman. And not only that its easily accessibility – just over one hour’s drive from the centre of Nelson city and options to go in for an hour a day or several days and plus suitable for all fitness levels. We are so lucky having this on our doorstep. 4. What are your three suitcase essentials? A good novel (in days gone by I would’ve said a Lonely Planet or Eyewitness guide, but the reality is today this is all available on my phone!), a lip balm and a credit card. 5. Where's next on your wish list? I’d love to visit South America – I’ve visited North America and Central America but would love to see the Amazon, Iguassu Falls, The Inca trail, Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu, Chilean wineries…ahh the list goes on. 6. What is the biggest myth about Nelson? That it’s is difficult to get to! We now have 400 flights in and out a week or accessible by road and the wonderful scenic ferry ride from Wellington in the North Island across to Picton in the South Island and then just an hour and half drive to Nelson. 7. The most unorthodox way you’ve travelled? Sorry to be boring but I’ve been quite traditional in my approach. I backpacked through Asia and beyond after leaving University back in the early 90s like many other Kiwis do and later in life have enjoyed many trips from family holidays to luxury escapes. New Zealand - North or South Island?

New Zealand is an adventure playground with a list of endless activities. With visitors often only having the time to stay for a few weeks, it is simply impossible to see everything. Many people decide to explore one island at a time, in the hope that they can return to New Zealand a second time and explore the other island. The only issue that remains is what island to visit? We have put together some of the highlights from both islands to help try and make up your mind. North Island Cities The North Island is home to New Zealand’s largest city and transport hub, Auckland. A lively city, Auckland has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, as well as major tourist attractions. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, it is easy to take a ferry to one of the laid back islands and be at the beach within thirty minutes. New Zealand’s capital city Wellington is also located in the North Island and is set amongst the charming harbour and rolling hills. Maori Culture Rotorua is the place to visit to discover more about Maori history and culture. This is your chance to experience a living Maori village and even spend the night here. The Bay of Islands also has significant Maori history; in particular, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. This is where New Zealand’s most important document was signed between the Maori people and Europeans in 1840. Over all, the North Island is a fantastic place to learn more about the heritage of New Zealand and its origins. Beaches The North Island offers some of New Zealand’s best beaches by the bucket load. Try the Bay of Islands for secluded and intimate beaches, or Abel Tasman National Park for hidden treasures, like the tranquil Golden Bay. West Auckland beaches prove you don’t have to travel far from the city to find a peaceful beach. The crystal clear waters of Piha beach are only thirty minutes from Auckland and has some of the best surfing conditions in New Zealand. South Island Winter Activities With some of the best ski slopes in the Southern Hemisphere, the South Island is fantastic for exhilarating winter activities. If you don’t fancy hitting the slopes why not try a dog sledding tour or relax in the natural Hot Springs after a day in the snow. The start of the winter season is celebrated with a 10 day festival in Queenstown with fireworks, parties and lots of fun outdoor activities. Fiordland’s The incredible Fiordland’s National Park is located at the very South of New Zealand and has been described as the most dramatic and impressive part of the country. Visitors can explore the striking natural environment of Doubtful and Milford Sounds by boat trip, or take a flight to see the views from above. If you enjoy hiking or trekking embark on the Milford Track and make your way through the awe inspiring wilderness. No matter what time of year you visit, this area of the South Island is simply stunning. Queenstown One of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations, there is something for everyone in this vibrant mountain side town. It is the ultimate destination for adventure, with an endless amount of activities to keep adrenaline junkies content. If adventure sports is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other activities available in Queenstown. Ride the gondola to Bob’s Peak for impressive views, take a cycling or walking tour, enjoy a scenic cruise and try the variety of eateries on offer. A unique and impressive destination with something for everyone!
