Amsterdam Day Trip

Recommended Posts

Check in early morning at main terminal at Glasgow Airport was really easy. You just put in your booking reference and scan your passports – literally a couple of minutes and that's it done.

It was then up to security approx. 10 minutes to get through but I would definitely recommend to leave plenty of time to get through - especially in Peak season

KLM had kindly arranged for us to get into the Sky Lounge at Glasgow airport - nice treat – thanks KLM! It has recently been refurbished and is modern and clean.

The flight itself , great. Cabin crew friendly, efficient, and displaying a high standard of service you would expect from the Dutch. We had a Large group onboard , 17 gentlemen connecting in Amsterdam to go to Lisbon. Love the fact that cabin crew will make an announcement during the approach to Schiphol. They know the connecting passengers on board and announce the gate areas that each passenger is to go to.

On disembarking the aircraft, it was also noted that the group of 17 got special guidance from KLM staff.

We went to the rail station at the bottom level of the Terminal building. Trains are every 15 minutes and takes about 20minutes to get into Amsterdam's Central station. Super easy

On arrival in the City of Amsterdam the sun was shining! We took a canal cruise. We were lucky enough to enjoy a glass of Prosecco, strawberries, chocolate as we sailed along the canals . Our captain gave us tourist information and facts during the cruise. Did you know that there are 800,000 people in Amsterdam and 1.5million bikes?? !!

After another walk along the canals taking in the sights and interesting smells!! Did you know that there are over 1000 'coffee shops' in Amsterdam?

We arrived at The Grasshopper hotel – a real Amsterdam institution. . There we were treated to lunch outdoors. A definite must do when in Amsterdam. Food was really good and nice to chill. Amsterdam is a beautiful unique city however you really need to be on the ball in Amsterdam for your safety. It would be so easy to get struck by one of the thousands of bikes or even a tram.

.. So after the Grasshopper we had a final relaxed stroll around the city taking in its last bit of culture including going by Anne Frank's house. If you want to do Anne Frank's house allow time to do this, you will likely be queuing for a while or pre-book them if you can. Barrhead Travel can do this for you too.

So back to the airport for the return journey

The airport itself is impressive. AMS is very modern, clean, shiny and super sign posted. The airport has one terminal. Is it long one level terminal split into ‘Zones’. There is quite a bit of distance involved if you are walking. Elderly passengers and those with even slight walking difficulties should pre-request wheelchair assistance. Barrhead Travel can do this for you.  Loads of staff at each gate area and lots of kiosks on hand to assist everything feels that the design of the airport is very much about efficiency. This is a super easy airport to connect through. For those passengers with an overnight in the airport there is a Yo Hotel, wow! Ultra-trendy and futuristic

Time to fly back - We enjoyed the same friendly efficient service and enjoyed a small snack. We had a savoury wrap and a cup of tea. On the return flight cabin crew were offering a simple drink service, wine, beers. This is all complementary on KLM .

Another great short flight which landed into a rainy Glasgow
